ICS Academic Super Bowl Teams Participate in State Competition for First Time
On Saturday, April 26, six ICS 7th & 8th grade students, two parents, one sibling, and teacher/academic coach Mrs. Richardson traveled to Southmont High School, near Crawfordsville, and competed in the 22nd annual Academic Super Bowl, Junior Division, sponsored by the Indiana Association of School Principals. This was the first time the ICS participated in the event. This year's Academic Super Bowl theme was "The Civil War 1820 – 1877."
In preparation for the competition, the English Team studied the literature and literary elements of the time period leading into, during, and after the Civil War. The Science Team studied relevant medical issues of the day, including diseases that Civil War soldiers contracted, such as typhoid, diarrhea, dysentery, and chicken pox. The Math Team studied the geometry of the Civil War, focusing on the implementation of the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Social Studies Team researched the major battles of the Civil War, such as Bull Run, Shiloh, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Vicksburg, and Sherman's March to the Sea, as well as studied the Reconstruction period.
The Science Team was led by Cindel H. and included Chelsie H., Dylan H., and Bailey L. The Social Studies Team was led by Bailey L. and included Nathan R., Quinn L., and Dylan H. The Math Team of two was led by Quinn L. and his teammate was Chelsie H. The English team was led by Nathan R., with Quinn L. and Cindel H serving alongside him. The interdisciplinary team was led by Bailey L. and included all ICS participants.
Mrs. Randall served as proctor, assisted by her son as scorekeeper. Both the Science Team and Interdisciplinary Team earned third place awards – competing in Class 4 against St. John Lutheran School (Indianapolis), St. Roch School (Indianapolis), North Vermillion Junior/Senior High (Cayuga), and Sycamore School (Indianapolis). Kudos to the ICS Academic Teams and their coaches!
