Art Classes Meet the Indiana Standards – And Then Some

During the second quarter of this school year, Mrs. Stuckey's and Mrs. Aldrich's classes produced some remarkable works of art. The assignments meet the Indiana standards while going "above and beyond" in quality and beauty. They are also part of the "Art to Remember" project, in which parents can get keepsakes of their student's artwork produced during the second quarter, such as T-shirts, coffee cups, and mouse pads. The following class-by-class assignment descriptions along with the state standards met by each were provided by the ICS art teachers. Examples of the art can be viewed below her explanations.

Kindergarten “Fishies” Kindergarteners used a two-part crayon “resist” method to create under-the-sea pictures. The first day, they put in their crayon lines, then added details. On the second day they painted with watercolors over the crayon. Indiana State Standard K.6.1: Use objects or animals from the real world as subject matter for artwork.

1st Grade “Flowers” Students used tempera to paint beautiful bouquets of flowers. Indiana State Standard 1.6.4: Demonstrate thoughtfulness and care in creating artwork.

2nd Grade “Still Life” (sunflowers) After learning about Vincent van Gogh and his work, 2nd Grade Art Classes used the Elements of Art and Principles of Design they have been studying to draw a still life of their own. Students were invited to select their own media. Indiana State Standard 2.7.1: Identify and apply elements (line, shape, form, texture, color, and space) and principles (repetition, variety, rhythm, and proportion) in artwork.

3rd Grade “Toucans” (with gray background) 3rd Graders linked art and science as they studied toucans found in the Brazilian rainforest. Technology made it possible for us to project an enormous toucan image onto a large screen so every student could get an up-close look at this beautiful bird. Then the students used their observational skills and a variety of colored pencils to draw their toucans. Indiana State Standards 3.6.1: Demonstrate refined perceptual skills in the production of artwork.

4th Grade “Parodies” (American Gothic) Students studied Grant Wood’s American Gothic picture. After viewing examples of parodies of this work, students tried their hands at creating their own parodies of American Gothic. Indiana State Standard 4.3.2: Construct meaning and develop well-supported interpretations in works of art based on personal response, properties found in the work, peer perspectives, and research-based background information.

5th Grade “Art and Science Integration” (dog face) As titled, art and science were linked in this integrated project. Students conducted research and found resources for an animal they wished to draw. They began with several thumbnail sketches of their ideas, which had to be approved. Then they refined their ideas as their worked on their final pieces. These drawings were NOT traced from photos; students used their powers of observation to bring their animals or insects to life. Self-evaluation was an integral part of the process. Indiana State Standard 5.8.2: Create artwork incorporating concepts, subject matter, technology, or the sign systems of other disciplines that communicates in-depth knowledge gained through integrated study.

6th Grade (toucan with blue background) Same assignment as 5th Grade; meets Indiana State Standard 6.8.2.

7th Grade (owl) Students could either focus on animals or illuminations, and most chose animals. The animals were to be drawn as if in their natural environment. Through this project, 7th grade art students learned about contrasts and the value scale. Among many others, this assignment meets Indiana State Standard 7.8.2.

8th Grade (stylized letter "B") Students produced illuminations, relative to the study of the art of literature, involving the first letter of their last name. They were allowed to use computers to assist in the design process. Numerous standards were addressed in this assignment, including 8.7.5 and 8.8.2.
