“Boys to Men” Program Ends on a High Note

On Saturday, March 14, 12 ICS and ICHS male students concluded a unique two-weekend program called "Boys to Men." The program involves young men taking the time to work closely with adult staff from both schools on character development, team building, and bringing their futures into sharper focus.

Second weekend activities were held at Craig Middle School in Lawrence. With a bit of a chill in the air, ICHS Behavior Coach Randy Ballard, ICHS Lead Teacher Daryl Werner, ICS Social Studies Teacher Jeff Clark, Client Services Manager Tim Mulherin, and parent volunteer Mike Sommers, along with their 12 "men in the making," reported to Craig and rendezvoused with Laura Borders, SPICE Program coordinator, at the wooded challenge course. (SPICE stands for "School Partnerships in Challenge Education.") During the morning, the group engaged themselves and one another in a variety of team-building and consciousness-raising exercises. After lunch came the ultimate challenge of the day: a 35-foot telephone pole climb...and leap into thin air (with double-belay/secure ropes protection). Although an individual event, each participant was cheered on by his fellow students and school staff. The photos below tell the heart of the story.
