Fun-Filled Fall Fiesta is a First at ICS

On Thursday, October 15th, 2009, members of the Irvington Preparatory Academy’s Cultures Club visited the Irvington Community School to host a Fall Fiesta for 7th and 8th graders. The Cultures Club prepared and served authentic Mexican dishes, assembled candy-filled piñatas and managed the activity (and ensuing pandemonium!), played salsa music and provided dance instruction, and taught the making of Hispanic culture-inspired crafts to their younger guests. This collaborative festive event concept became a reality thanks to IPA Spanish Teacher Ms. Twito, with a big assist from ICS Spanish Teacher Ms. May.

“The fiesta idea came about during the summer when I was thinking of activities for the Cultures Club members,” recalls Ms. Twito. “I wanted students to reach outside of the high school and hopefully make some connections with the middle school students.” The high school students met three times to plan the event, went on a shopping trip for food and crafts materials, and spent the evening before the fiesta preparing all the food, under the guidance of Norma Mendoza, IPA Freshman Clara Mendoza’s mother.

The Fall Fiesta’s aim was to immerse the 7th and 8th grade students in a rich ethnic cultural experience. Judging from the excitement of the guests and the enthusiasm of their hosts, it’s safe to say, mission accomplished! “My students and I were very pleased with the outcome,” confirms Ms. Twito. “We felt like we accomplished what we set out to do, not only in providing this unique educational experience but also in helping to bridge the gap between the middle school and high school cultures.”

Ms. May heard from many of the attendees that the fiesta was "a lot of fun.” Many participants asked about having another fiesta come spring, which the Spanish teachers are already discussing. Ms. May comments, “I hope to do more activities promoting relationship building between our middle school and our high school students.” She continues, “It was interesting to see the leadership roles the high schoolers took on while they were executing the fiesta. It was a great picture of the leadership we want for our kids here at the grade school.”

Of note, Ms. Mendoza’s fiesta volunteer efforts were considerable. She assisted Cultures Club members in identifying suitable recipes and shopping for groceries. As well, Ms. Mendoza helped set up, monitor, and clean up the fiesta food station. Gracias, Senorita Mendoza! And thanks to the IPA Cultures Club for their fabulous Fall Fiesta! Bien hecho (well done)!
