Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to Present ICS with “Maestro” Award

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that the Irvington Community School will be presented with the “Maestro” Award from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at a special recognition Awards Tea on March 8, 2009. The "Maestro" Award is bestowed upon the one school earning the greatest number of honors in the annual statewide Symphony in Color Contest. This year, ICS had seven finalists, which led to four blue ribbons! The following ICS students will be honored at the Symphony in Color Awards Tea celebrating the 35 Blue Ribbon Winners in the state:

  • Brendan Clark (1st grade)
  • Jayde Tyler (2nd grade)
  • Eva Watson (4rd grade)
  • Alyssa Meyer (6th grade)

  • Our students' artwork is now on display in the Oval Promenade Gallery of the Hilbert Circle Theatre, home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and can be seen there until March 30, 2009. After that, their artwork will be featured at the Indiana State Museum from April 4, 2009, to May 10, 2009, along with three other inspirational entries from ICS. These winning pieces were created by ICS 3rd grader Piper Kelly, 4th grader Alex Urbanek, and 5th grader Zoe Browne. Initially, more than 35,000 students participated statewide. The exhibit at the Indiana State Museum will feature 100 finalists — seven created by ICS students. Every Irvington student in grades 1-6 participated in the contest. We encourage you to visit this special exhibit and feast your eyes on some remarkable works of art!

    About the Creative Process

ICS K-6 Art Teacher Mrs. Stuckey worked closely with K-6 Music Teacher Mrs. Constantine on this project, with assistance from 7-8 teachers Mrs. Aldrich (Art) and Mr. Lane (Music). The overall creative process essentially involved two steps: Mrs. Constantine taught the students about the musical form, composers, and instruments; then Mrs. Stuckey guided them through the artistic process as they interpreted select orchestral pieces, which included works composed by Mozart, Lalo, Brahms, Strauss, and Bernstein.

Please join us in congratulating our talented young artists and their teachers for their outstanding efforts — they have made us very proud!
