ICS Science Fair 2008 Features Work of Aspiring Young Scientists

This year’s ICS Science Fair was held on Friday, Feb. 15. Projects conceived by 4th, 5th, and 6th graders dominated the gym floor, with row after row of clever, insightful, and even wondrous poster-board presentations beckoning the curious to learn more about the world of science as seen through the creative minds of our young scientists.

Following the scientific method, all 4th-6th grade students initially presented their projects to their classes prior to their presentations to Science Fair judges in the ICS Gym.

Some of the more noteworthy research questions and hypothetical statements included:

• Can eating poorly affect blood flow?

• How come things float or sink?image

• Diet Coke vs. Diet Pepsi

• Can air pressure push an egg into a bottle?

• Does talking affect plants?

• Powering a clock with a lemon

• Will a plant grow faster under a black or white light?

• The world of guppies

• What’s up with static electricity?

• Do marshmallows go boom?

• Do video games distract you?

The 2008 ICS Science Fair Grand Champions are Sarah M. and Grant D, who were also recognized as 6th grade winners. Will C. took 5th grade honors, and Betsy N. 4th.

Judges included Ms. Jacobs (ICS 7th and 8th grade science teacher), Ms. Woo (technology coordinator), Mr. McFadden (4th grade teacher), and Eli Lilly and Company volunteers. Ms. Welsh (5th grade), Ms. Dwyer (4th grade), and Mr. Yeoman (6th grade) coordinated the event.

Congratulations to all our Science Fair participants!
